Seuss not only has a gorgeous infectious smile, but he has the most beautiful temperament to match. He’s just a friendly, goofy and emotionally intelligent dog. This lovely boy found himself in a rural pound, and we straight away recognised he was a sibling of a litter we brought in a couple of years ago – he was one of the siblings that was rehomed locally before the litter was surrendered. Their mum was a Golden Retriever and dad was a Wolfy mix. Seuss is just like his siblings who have all grown up into lovely dogs as well.
Whilst sitting at a good size of just a touch over 30kg, due to his great basic obedience he doesn’t feel like a massive dog. Seuss has impeccable house manners and loves to join his carer for some gardening, cooking or watching tv. He is a true companion who loves to be by your side. Seuss is ALWAYS up for some couch snuggles, but will also take himself off to his bed to relax if you are busy or have guests over. Although he is a fantastic house member, he still loves to play. He absolutely loves his toys and will spend some of the day running around the garden with his favourite toys or if his foster carers are up for a game of tug or retrieving, he will never say no! When he has had his play, he can often be found relaxing in the sun dreaming about how good foster care life is.
Seuss was in foster care in the inner city before heading to one of our trainers for some leash work skills. He enjoyed familiarising himself with the big smoke and for a country dog, he took it all in his stride and enjoyed his daily outings a lot. He is confident in new environments unless there is a loud noise, but with direction he recovers well. Seuss absolutely loves it when his walks lead him to meeting new people and saying hi – he soaks up all the attention he can get. He has enough energy to keep up with whatever fun activities you have in store and has shown a keen interest in water (not surprising considering his breed type). This boy would absolutely love a family who will take him along with them to new and exciting places like the beach, cafes, pubs or camping.
Seuss was a little bit behind in his socialisation when coming into care. He was never aggressive, just got very excited when he saw other dogs and his play style needed some improvement due to his size and over confidence. He has been staying with one of our trainers for some direction and has been enjoying spending time with dogs of all shapes and sizes. He is very retriever like in nature, but he sometimes forgets his size and can get a bit rude in play like paws over backs. As long as he has a handler who is experienced with larger dogs, he immediately listens to play time interruptions and therefore is easy to manage. He will be fine as an only dog or with another soft natured, well-trained dog who is preferably smaller than him, as he can sometimes get a bit intimidated by dogs larger than him. His new family will need to provide him with opportunities to continue his socialisation with other dogs, preferably in the form of play dates and social walks rather than dog parks so that over aroused, untrained dogs can be avoided.
Seuss is a smart cookie and has already learnt a lot of new skills in care. He is crate trained and even takes himself off to his crate at bedtime where he sleeps peacefully without a peep all night. He walks impeccably on leash now, has perfect basic commands, recalls on a long line well and is always looking to his handler for direction. Seuss travels well in the car and actually loves going for car rides. He is completely toilet trained, is non-destructive (except for fluffy toys!) and is not a barker. He has been ok left alone while the carers are out for a few hours here or there but prefers to either be outside or crated inside. He will need his people home more often than not during the settling in period – this will ensure a smooth transition and make sure that he feels safe before being left alone for longer periods. Seuss loves his food and toys which makes training a breeze! He is a moderately active dog – chill when he’s had his exercise, but definitely still a young dog who loves a bit of play time and mental stimulation before resting. A family who plan to do a good daily outing and factor in some training time will be perfect for this lovely boy. We are really looking for a home who has a keen interest and knowledge in dog training to ensure he stays a brilliant canine citizen as he absolutely loves and craves the direction and routine he has gotten while in our care. There is no better embodiment of love than the look Seuss gives his handlers while doing some training… his smile could warm even the coldest of hearts.
Seuss is just the type of dog who you meet and fall absolutely head over heels in love with. He is a big lover and would sit in your lap if you let him. His eyes, smile and the way he just leans into you for a good pat or belly rub make him quite frankly irresistible! He is going to make an absolutely exceptional addition to a lucky family. Seuss will require a family that will allow him inside to be with the family, provide a good quality diet, take him on lots of fun adventures and provide a place to sleep inside of a night.
If you are interesting in making Seuss a permanent member of your family, then fill out a Dog Adoption Enquiry form found on the Fetching Dogs website and please include plenty of information about your previous dog experience and the type of lifestyle Seuss could look forward to having with you. An incredible dog, deserves an incredible forever family. Please be aware we are all volunteers and very time poor at the moment, so only the most suitable sounding applications will progress to a phone interview – the more information you provide the better.
